“I have a student from a family that is struggling who needs shoes.” So began our first request of the Principals’ Student Support Fund. The child wore flip-flops to school—not only a safety concern but as fall weather approached, a problem for keeping her feet warm and dry as well. Working together with the school’s principal and secretary, the SAF provided funds for two new pairs of shoes for the student and also used the opportunity to show school staff how to use the 211 online database to look for community resources for similar needs.
We received this note in response:
“I wanted to thank you again for the gift card for one of our students—her mom came to pick up the gift card and was going to take her daughter to the store to pick out something new. They were thrilled that someone out there cared enough to help them out. I also wanted to thank you for showing us about the United Way 2-1-1 web directory. We got a phone call from another family today saying that their three girls needed new socks, underwear, and shoes. We promptly contacted the Exchange Club and St. Alphonsus Food & Clothing Center. What a valuable resource this is to our families in need! I added the United Way 2-1-1 to my internet favorites. I have a feeling we'll be making more referrals in the weeks ahead. I am so grateful for Student Advancement Foundation, United Way, and the many generous people in our community who keep food & clothing banks stocked. Thank you for your part in giving us this community connection.”
